Ep. #7: Payton Turner - Women’s anger and, sometimes, rage

WORD has two bookstores: one in Greenpoint, the northernmost neighborhood of Brooklyn, that opened in March of 2007, and one in Jersey City, which opened in December 2013. Our primary goal is to be whatever our communities need us to be!

In Brooklyn, that means carrying a lot of paperback fiction (especially classics), cookbooks, board books, and absurdly cute cards and stationery. In addition, we're fiends for a good event, from the classic author reading and Q&A to potlucks and a basketball league (and anything set in a bar). We're a small operation, just 1000 square feet, but we read too much, so it all works out.

In Jersey City, we've got an inventory of current and past favorites from all genres and categories as well as a café serving Stumptown coffee drinks and an array of fresh salads, sandwiches, and pastries for your pleasure! We also host a full calendar of events each month, from provocative and thoughtful to flat-out fun!

Powell's Books is an independent bookseller serving Portland, Oregon, since 1971. We've grown to employ over 530 people across five Portland-area stores and Powells.com, and our book inventory exceeds two million volumes. In spite of our substantial size and reach, we remain grounded by our company's core values, which have guided us through the ups and downs of the bookselling industry. Each and every employee's love of books drives us forward.

We have an especially intimate relationship with Portland — what other city in America can name a bookstore as its top attraction? We host over 500 author events a year, in addition to children's storytimes, writing workshops, game demonstrations, and book clubs. Through Powells.com and our expansive online community, we also reach readers around the world, people who are as excited about books as we are.

Ep. #8: Youngna Park on children’s books

Stories is a children’s bookshop and storytelling lab in Brooklyn. We believe stories can change the world. Stories ignite a child’s limitless imagination, innate curiosity, and passion for learning. You can sense it intuitively when you read a great story with your kid, or think back to that feeling of being read to when you were small. We believe growing up in a world of books can make all the difference, and that storytelling is a vital art, one that in our digitally-saturated age, deserves and demands preservation.

Northshire Bookstore in Saratoga, NY.  Similar to our Manchester store, this store is a big general bookstore with a large floor devoted to Children. We have tried to create a store that fosters browsing and discovery. We can, of course, get any book in print, but we believe in the joy of serendipity and have laid out the store to enhance this experience.

Additional Bookstores

Visited two great bookstores in January. I bought The Luminaries at The Alexander Book Company in San Francisco for my cousin Risa’s birthday, and Pat the Bunny and Goodnight Moon at The Corner Bookstore in New York for my brother Steven’s brand new granddaughter.

The Corner Bookstore became an instant mecca for a book-hungry Carnegie Hill when it opened in 1978. Located in a landmark neighborhood in New York City, we have been satisfying the literary desires of this residential neighborhood for over three decades. We take enormous pride in our stock, and carefully select current fiction and nonfiction titles to bring only the best of the best to our customers. Our commitment to carrying “only the best of the best” extends to all sections of the store including history, biography, travel, cook books, parenting, poetry, mysteries, and art.

Welcome to Alexander Book Company - Your Independent Downtown San Francisco Bookstore. With three floors stocked with over 50,000 new books to browse and shop, Alexander Book Company is a full-service independent bookstore, conveniently located in Downtown SOMA district of San Francisco.
