Book Notes: When Time Stopped - A Memoir of My Father‘s War and What Remains, by Ariana Neumann
When Time Stopped - A Memoir of My Father‘s War and What Remains, by Ariana Neumann was lent to me by our friend Kali who insisted that I put it on the top of my TBR pile. Good call. Thank you Kali.
This is a beautifully written and profoundly moving memoir. Neumann tells the story of her quest, her exhaustive investigation, to unravel the mystery of her father’s identity, a story of survival and of the courage of friends and family, Jews and Gentiles, in Nazi Germany and occupied Czechoslovakia during World War II.
In a podcast interview after the book was published in 2020, the author commented on what she learned from the story she uncovered. “We must all be aware of the insidious nature of evil and how gently and almost imperceptibly it can seep through a society and make seemingly educated intelligent people do atrocious things.”
